Returning to the Mall Galleries from 9-12 October 2024, Women in Art Fair provides a prominent platform for women artists, gallerists, and curators during Frieze Week. With the curatorial theme ‘Time for Unity,’ the Fair continues its mission to celebrate and elevate the work of emerging and established women artists, pursuing inclusivity and challenging the gender imbalance in the art industry.
As Women in Art Fair founder Jacqueline Harvey notes, “This is not about excluding men, it’s about disrupting the established model which isn’t serving us, as it’s failing half of the artistic community: women. We need radical innovation to address the glaring gender imbalance in the industry. We stand for diversity and inclusion in the arts, and we’re here not just to encourage dialogue around gender and culture, but fundamentally to change the way art is exhibited.”
Since its launch in 2023, Women in Art Fair has made remarkable strides in making women’s work visible, with its annual event thriving as a significant moment in the art world. Last year’s fair showcased 20 galleries and 200 independent artists, and this year’s edition attracted over 2,000 submissions through an Open Call, all responding to the theme of the creative process and the challenges encountered on the path to creating a final work of art.
Cynthia Valianti Corbett, a member of the Fair's selection committee, has been a steadfast supporter of women artists through her gallery—celebrating its 20th anniversary this year—along with the Young Masters Art Prize, Emerging Women Award, and her curatorial platform Focus on the Female.
She reflects on the significance of the initiative, stating, “It has been encouraging to see women artists beginning to get more recognition in recent times, building their confidence and bringing more wonderful work to the fore—as has been witnessed by the exceptional quality of work submitted for our Open Call this year. Women in Art Fair is both a powerful initiative—in terms of profile-raising for our exhibitors—and an important moment to celebrate all that women contribute to the art ecosystem.”
