“Everything in the world is about sex except sex. Sex is about power” - Oscar Wilde
The urns chained together are anthropomorphised by the viewer into a larger and a smaller character, leaving them to puzzle out their relationship. Carved into the flanking urns are images from popular culture and art history, emojis meet sculptures by way of memes. A fantasy of police brutality by Tom of Finland sits next to Apollo flaying Marsyas, while a disney satyr looks on. The japanese inspired Oil Slick glaze shines like polished leather. The tactile quality of the unglazed chains encourage the viewer to try on the harness, igniting feelings of restraint, protection and vulnerability.
This grouping of 5 artworks where first exhibited together at Foreign Trade - A Celebration of Queer Migration. The show was a response to the rise in xenophobia and hate crimes since the Brexit voteand was exhibited during the month of the exit date.
