Inspired by the old masters, I use the most traditional media, oil paints and brushes. I pay particular attention to skin tone and light within my portraits, and aim for the paintings to be delicate and realistic.
Yet in this body of work I paint on unconventional media such as steel. For me, steel as a material represents the beautiful strength and vulnerability that exists when it comes to our mental health. Steel can be marked and scratched, its smooth finish altered by dents and the surface tarnished by rust - yet it is strong and will stand.
These intimate portraits aim to uplift as they explore the themes of mental health and resilience.
I also leave the hair and clothing minimal, in marked contrast to the detail of my sitter's face. I don't want the viewer to become distracted by this, and want to encourage them to focus on connecting with each sitter.
