I have always liked the boldness of the work of Sonia Delaunay as both a textile designer and an artist. ‘Sonia’ was inspired by my memory of an old photograph in which models wore Sonia Delaunay dresses in front of a Citröen B.12 painted by the artist in 1925. It evidenced her witty use of her own work. Using a beautifully coloured vintage scarf as the starting point, I have embroidered ‘Sonia’ modelling a sweater with a geometric design from ‘Stitchcraft’ magazine April 1946 to reflect the design of the scarf. I have hand knitted pieces of fabric to extend the textures of the piece and to directly reference the knitting pattern creating a tongue in cheek aristocratic image inspired by a domestic knitting pattern, domestic design as art.
