Made in January 2020, this unique piece was an optimistic and hopeful response to the beginning of the new decade. 2019 seemed charcterised by right wing views and global pessimism. Ironically my sentiment was somewhat misplaced due to the unprecedented lockdown in March 2020 as a result of COVID. ‘Leo’ is an interpretation of the January 1950 cover of ‘Stitchcraft’ magazine and is particularly relevant in these uncertain times as he is depicted enjoying himself cycling. This joyously positive embroidery uses hand knitted Shetland wool and a found palette of fabrics, machine embroidered onto a vintage scarf. It is embellished with beads and sequins and reflects the optimism of 1950 with my wish and need for optimism now. Leo was among the most popular names in both 1950 (Leonard) and 2020. It reflects the current interest in vintage names for both boys and girls.
