Ashley January's contemporary paintings deeply explore her experiences as a mother, addressing themes of preeclampsia, premature birth, and birth trauma, shedding light on the crisis of Black maternal mortality in America. At EXPO CHICAGO, Ashley unveils paintings from her new series 'Environments of a Heavy Joy'.

"I address the Black maternal mortality and morbidity crisis in America through painting and multimedia. Black women are three to four times more likely to die from pregnancy-related complications than white women. Influenced by my own traumatic pregnancy and survival, the imagery centers the experiences of Black mothers and children who have suffered adverse birth outcomes but challenge the institutional modes in finding solutions. Motifs are structured around ideas dictated by necessary rituals of care. The images serve as a call to action for more awareness, research, and eradication of unnecessary maternal and infant death in the United States of America." says Ashley.

In the life and studio of Trinidad-born artist based in Los Angeles Miles Regis every action serves as an opportunity for creative self-expression. Proficient in both fine art and fashion design, Regis seamlessly integrates materials and languages from each realm to enrich the other. His large-scale mixed media paintings on canvas and linen incorporate dimensional collage elements such as denim, buttons, leather, printed matter, sequins, and patches of eclectically sourced found textiles, alongside his skillful, gestural, richly hued abstract and figurative painting techniques. Embracing a storytelling stance, Regis portrays fundamental scenes of love, loss, freedom, survival, activism, and living history with an aggressively hopeful and humanistic approach.
Regarding his series 'My Beautiful Women' on show at EXPO CHICAGO, Regis says: "This new series is a celebration of feminine influences in my life, acknowledging the beauty and grace of maternal forces past, present, and future. It captures cultural and ancestral beauty experienced from my Trinidadian roots to my Hollywood lifestyle, challenging established beauty standards. Each painting reflects the moods of love experienced over the years, from the devotion of my mother to the nurturing energy of my wife and children, while recalling the majesty of the 'Black is Beautiful' moment in America."

Multi-award-winning artist based in Ireland and England, Matt Smith is renowned for his groundbreaking work in museums, galleries, and historic houses, employing clay, textiles, and associated references to explore institutional critique and artist intervention. Much of Smith’s work explores the representation of marginalised histories, giving a voice to those hidden and silenced and Smith often creates works in response to museum collections. His pieces reveal and critique the view of history created by those with authority and invite reflection on alternative interpretations.
With a focus on queer perspectives, Smith's work prompts contemplation on movement, displacement, and identity construction within cultural institutions. We're excited to present his latest works from the 'Family Romance' series. Inspired by a recent installation titled 'Untold Lives', now open at Kensington Palace, and influenced by British royal wedding plates, each large meat platter commemorates a queer union, subverting conventional family narratives. These pieces construct substitute family groups through object collection, paying homage to overlooked histories and embodying Smith's inheritance of fragile familial legacies.
Featured unions unions such as Claude Cahun and Radcliffe Hall, Oscar Wilde and Lord Alfred Douglas, Walt Whitman and Peter Doyle, Eleanor Butler and Sarah Ponsonby, Thomas Ernest Boulton and Frederick William Park (Fanny and Stella), and Edward Carpenter and George Merrill, reveal diverse expressions of love and resilience. Through 'Family Romance' Smith prompts a reevaluation of traditional family and heritage concepts, illuminating the diverse tapestry of queer relationships across history and cultures.
'Most museums have been slow to represent the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered communities. Even when there is willingness on the part of museum staff, few objects can relate to all sections of the diverse queer community, and museums rely on material culture – objects, things – to tell stories. No exhibition could adequately, and equally, convey the subtleties and complexities that are inherent in such a large and diverse group as the queer ‘community’. Rather, I hope this very individual take on the museum’s collections reminds people that there is more than one story to tell about any object." says Matt Smith.

  • Celebrated as 'the next David Hockney' by Annabel Sampson, Deputy Editor of Tatler, painter Andy Burgess, originally from London but...
Celebrated as 'the next David Hockney' by Annabel Sampson, Deputy Editor of Tatler, painter Andy Burgess, originally from London but now residing in Arizona, continuously explores his fascination with contemporary architecture. His latest series of paintings on panel and canvas vividly reimagines iconic modernist and contemporary houses. With meticulous selection, Burgess chooses buildings for their clean lines, bold geometric design, and dynamic forms, approaching each subject with the discernment of a portrait painter. Often, real places are reinvented, with alterations to architecture, design, and lighting, infusing the scenes with a dream-like quality and a captivating allure.
Delving into the genesis of modern architecture in Europe and the US, Burgess elucidates his fascination, saying: ‘Despite the huge impact of early modern architecture, the innovative and subtle minimalist buildings that I am researching, with their concrete and steel frames, flat roofs, and glass walls, never became the dominant mode of twentieth century building. We have continued to build the vast majority of houses in a traditional and conservative idiom, so that these great examples of modern architecture, designed by the likes of Gropius, Loos and Breuer to name but a few, are still shocking and surprising today in their boldness and modernity, almost a hundred years after they were built.’
